How California's Self-Determination Program (SDP) Can Pay for Autism Coaching

Can Self-Determination Program funds pay for autism coaching?

Yes. California's Self-Determination Program (SDP) gives Regional Center participants an individual budget and the freedom to choose the services that fit their goals, and independence coaching is exactly the kind of person-centered service SDP was designed to fund. Quiet Confidence Coaching works with SDP participants in San Diego and can bill through your Financial Management Service for independence coaching, life skills, adult transition support, career coaching, and community integration services.

What is the Self-Determination Program?

SDP is a California program that lets Regional Center consumers direct their own services. Instead of choosing only from a vendor list, participants receive an individual budget based on their needs and build a spending plan around their own goals: independence, community involvement, employment, and daily living skills. A Financial Management Service, or FMS, handles the payments.

How do families use SDP for independence coaching?

The path runs in four steps. First, the goal: independence coaching supports outcomes SDP already values, like community integration and adaptive skill building. Second, the spending plan: coaching is written into the participant's plan with their person-centered goals. Third, the FMS: Quiet Confidence Coaching invoices through your FMS so families are not paying out of pocket. Fourth, the coaching itself: in-person and in-home sessions across San Diego County, built around goals the participant chooses. Ask on the free consultation call and we will walk through the language your plan needs.

What other services does SDP include for benefits?

  • Personal Assistance and Home Care: Daily living support including help with bathing, eating, grooming, mobility, medication management, meal planning, and basic or heavy household chores.

  • Respite Services: Temporary relief for primary caregivers and families.

  • Behavioral Intervention: Therapeutic and intervention services designed to support positive behavior development and mental well-being.

  • Employment and Community Participation: Job coaching, vocational training, transport options (such as non-medical transportation or rideshare vouchers), and social or recreational activities like art, dance, or community classes. This is where Quiet Confidence Coaching falls for categorized services.

  • Health and Safety Supports: Specialized medical equipment, home/vehicle modifications for accessibility, live-in caregivers, and health and wellness coaching.

  • Independent Facilitation and FMS: Program support services including Financial Management Services (FMS) to handle payroll and taxes, and independent facilitators to help design person-centered plans.
